Walk of Shame (Love Unexpectedly)
3.75 starsI have read a few Lauren Layne titles, and for the most part, I have enjoyed them. I was avoiding Walk of Shame at first because I thought it was NA, and I am not a huge fan of the New Adult genre. In fact, most of time I can't stand the angsty whining. I decided to take a chance on it after some research on Amazon and GoodReads, and I'm glad I did, though the book had mixed results for me.
Georgie is a happy go lucky socialite. She lives in a luxury apartment in Manhattan, parties at all hours with her clique, and tries to brighten the mornings for the concierge staff with daily donut bribes. The one low point in her life is Andrew Mulroney, a divorce attorney who also lives in her building. Andrew is like an attractive robot; everyday at 5am he leaves for the gym. Georgie plans her day around being in the lobby to verbally spar with him every morning. Theirs is a relationship built on verbal jabs and putdowns.
I did enjoy the banter between Andrew and Georgie. I also found the opposites attract aspects of the story incredibly fun. What I didn't enjoy so much was Georgie. I guess I have absolutely nothing in common with her, and found her chosen life-style of partying (followed by charity work), annoying. It must be nice to have nothing else to worry about but which new dress you're going to wear clubbing. I just found her very shallow. She's 28 and is only now considering taking the job her dad keeps dangling over her head. Really? While I imagine that it might be a relief to not have to worry about keeping food on the table or a roof over your head, Georgie's life-style made her completely alien to me. I could not relate to her, and I don't think I wanted to.
Walk of Shame was complete fluff. It was a quick read, it consumed little brain power, and it was exactly what I needed when I picked it up. It's just not anything that's going to stick with me for very long. Pick it up if you enjoy light-hearted romances.
