Wake of Vultures (The Shadow)

Wake of Vultures (The Shadow) - Lila Bowen 4 - 4.5 stars

I loved Nettie's voice. Her hazardous journey to discover who she really is begins with a curse from a woman who drowned on dry land, and an evil cannibal owl that eats children. Tackling themes of self worth and self identity, Wake of Vultures is peopled with unique secondary characters. Some of them were one dimensional and not very interesting (most of the Rangers), but Sam, Dan, and Winifred managed to surprise and endear themselves as they assisted Nettie on her path of revenge. The alternate Old West was a dusty landscape, where danger and monsters lurked by every cactus. Engrossing and impossible to put down, I raced through this in just a few sittings. Recommended
